We’ve all made mistakes, it is part of what makes us human. At the same time we worry about making a mistake at work. Will I be blamed? Will I be called out and ridiculed? Will I lose my job? Companies are rapidly releasing and deploying code, and as a result things sometimes break. This shouldn’t result in fear and panic when something goes wrong.

People need permission to learn, and with the permission to learn comes the permission to fail. We learn from our mistakes. A mistake is made, we iterate, and make changes to find a better solution. Mistakes lead to new knowledge.

This talk will explore what is needed from a cultural, processes, and tools perspective to build an environment that embraces learning including:

• Building a blameless culture of avoiding finger-pointing and shaming individuals when mistakes are made.
• Providing psychological safety. When people feel safe they are more willing to take chances and learn something new.
• Embracing experimentation. Experiments lead to new knowledge about your application, infrastructure, and users.
• Putting safety mechanisms, such as circuit breakers, in place with feature flags so mistakes don’t negatively impact the business.
